Cricket: Klaassen, Van Beek return to squad for T20 World Cup

The experienced duo of Colin Ackermann and Logan van Beek have been included in the Netherlands’ 15-player squad for the ICC Men’s T20 cricket World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next month.

Left-arm quick Fred Klaassen returns after a lone ODI appearance last year while Glamorgan’s Timm van der Gugten last featured in a T20I on the tour to Oman in November 2024.

VRA’s trio of Teja Nidamanuru, Shariz Ahmad and Vikramjit Singh have been dropped alongside Viv Kingma, Daniel Doram, Ryan Klein and Tim Pringle.

Pringle could consider himself unlucky after being one of the few bright spots on a disappointing tour to Bangladesh in August and is currently leading Northern Districts’ spin bowling across all three formats in New Zealand’s domestic circuit.

All-rounder Van Beek, who missed the entirety of 2025 due to commitments with Wellington and Leicestershire, has recovered from a fractured toe and returns to lead the bowling attack.

Paul van Meekeren, Kyle Klein, and Bas de Leede are the other fast bowling options.

Opener Michael Levitt and De Leede also return from injuries, having missed out on the Bangladesh tour, to bolster a batting lineup that features captain Scott Edwards, Max O’Dowd and Ackermann.

Off-spinner Aryan Dutt and left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe lead the spin bowling attack with Saqib Zulfiqar and Zach Lion-Cachet as all-round options.

Wicket-keeper batter Noah Croes will feature in his maiden T20 World Cup and provide batting cover.

The Netherlands are placed in Group A and will play the curtain raiser against Pakistan in Colombo (February 7) before taking on Namibia in Delhi (February 10), the USA in Chennai (February 13) and India in Ahmedabad (February 18).

Five members of the squad flew out to Mumbai today (January 12) before the rest of the squad flies out to Chennai on 21st for a preparatory camp.

The Dutch will also play two official warm-up fixtures in Colombo against Pakistan (February 2) and Sri Lanka ‘A’ (February 4).

Squad:

Colin Ackermann, Logan van Beek, Noah Croes, Aryan Dutt, Scott Edwards (captain, wicketkeeper), Timm van der Gugten, Fred Klaassen, Kyle Klein, Bas de Leede, Michael Levitt, Zach Lion-Cachet, Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe, Max O’Dowd, and Saqib Zulfiqar.
