The Netherlands is one of 14 countries to sign a joint declaration condemning the Israeli government’s decision to approve 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Britain drew up the declaration, stating that the approvals “not only violate international law but also risk fueling instability”.

The settlements, the statement said, “risk undermining” the implementation of the Gaza peace plan and “harming prospects for long term peace and security across the region”.

The statement called on Israel to reverse the decision and stop the expansion of settlements. “

“We are resolute in our support of Palestinians’ right of self-determination,” the statement said. “We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution in accordance with relevant UN Security Council.”

Last Sunday Israel approved a proposal for the new Jewish settlements, which brings the recent total to 69, according to the far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, the Guardian reported.
